Grown on the fertile slopes of Mt. Vesuvio, this wine is a blend of the Piedirosso and Aglianico grapes. Fruity but dry, the forward flavors are dominated by black cherry and plum. A unique strawberry flavor and strong acidity make this wine vibrant and unique.
2005 DigiOr Piedirosso Pompeiano DOC
As its name suggests, the Piedirosso Pompeiano is grown in the village of Pompeii, where rich volcanic soils nurture the vines. Piedirosso means “red foot” in Italian that comes from the red-footed birds that eat the grape from the vine. This is an ancient grape variety around Naples, and one of the primary grapes in the famed Lacryma Christi blend.
Piedirosso is a light-bodied, dry but fruity wine. The aroma of this wine is earthy and vegetal. It is a red wine with some minerality and flavors of cranberry and strawberry. A sour cherry undertone knits together the flavors and leads smoothly to the earthy finish. Piedirosso has been in cultivation since before the destruction of Pompeii in 79 AD, making it a truly ancient varietal and a totally unique old-world wine experience.
